interesting query on H-IDEAS about operas about justice. here are some of the answers:

John Adams, _The Death of Klinghoffer_. One of the more controversial aspects of this opera is that Adams presents voices from both sides of the Palestine/Israel conflict,
both couched in terms of social justice for the oppressed.

Leos Janacek, _From the House of the Dead_. This is based on a novel by Dostoyevsky set in a Russian prison camp. Justice -- and the perversion of justice -- are an
underlying theme.

John Moran, _The Manson Family: An Opera_. This is a one act experimental opera with some lyrics based on transcripts of the trial of the Manson "family."

Dead Man Walking, by Jake Heggie and librettist Terrance McNally, addresses justice in the context of the death penalty.

Don Giovanni, although the issue of justice may be stronger in the Spanish dramas Voices of Light, by Richard Einhorn -- about Joan of Arc -- big issues of justice here.
