this year's birthday was great, in a totally non-traditionally-mariah way. usually i try to do a bunch of stuff and see as many people as possible. and prior to getting knocked up, i had planned to start being out of town on my birthday.

instead, i implied to a couple of HS friends that I was bummed i couldnt travel on my birthday, and so they travelled to me! it was very relaxing and fun and talky and we went to a fancy place for dinner and lambertville during the day and there were 20 minutes or so when it was sunshiny and snowing and grey and blue and white all at the same time. maybe the first time that nature has wanted me to be happy on my birthday.

my mom called and K and C txted and jose called and sang the saddest most pathetic version of happy birthday ive ever heard, which was beautiful. i suspect valentine's day will be much the same. i have less and less energy and my breathing is harder and harder, and i have a doctor's appointment that night. so it will creep by without so much as anything out of the ordinary. we will maybe make fancy dinner at home and curl up on the couch. but because of the way i feel, it will be totally fine with me.

J got me, in addition to the volvo(!), the most beautiful coffee-table book on deep-sea creatures. i have always secretly loved deep-sea creatures because they are amazing aliens that exist just over there. it's stunning.

Isn't it a deep blessing when good friends from the past remain wonderful and delightful friends in the present. Al and Jake are heroes on that front. Isn't your baby the first for the group? I'm sure they will want to be kept in the loop when baby one for generation 2 of the group is born. Call Tav. He and Renee just found out that due to the kind of breech position, feet first, Zora is in, Renee has to have a C section. A little love is needed there.

They keep flipping the baby and she keeps flipping back to the feet first position. Yeah, I know babies flip at the last minute but it's NYC and 90% of the births in NYC are Csections. It's obscene.

that makes me so angry. the baby industry is insane these days and getting worse. new jersey is supposed to be one of the worst states in the country for c-section rates, though thankfully our hospital is better than normal for that. but i know my doctors have no qualms about unnecessary c-section.
